we just got back from the vet to say goodbye to our Italian greyhound Sam.
we took him in this last Thursday after my urging to get him looked at - basically he was very lethargic and hesitant to eat (very out of character for the dog that has climbed onto counters and tables to get at potential leftovers), and I could see that his ears and gums were pale, which is a very bad sign that us vet tech students have been told to look for once we get into clinical settings.
they told us that he had two masses on his spleen, and he was severely anemic - just barely on the cusp of needing a blood transfusion. he hadn’t gotten any better after they gave him some medication, and the blood test told us that his body was not producing any red blood cells, and that he was breathing so heavily because he just couldn’t get the oxygen he needed. he struggled just to get up and walk over to his water dish nearby and we’d been having to hand-feed him. he was too old to undergo surgery, and with how his condition had been, any treatment would just prolong the inevitable for a short time.
he was still his feisty self in the end, though - he doesn’t like having his feet touched and even when he was drugged up from the relaxation meds he still tried to bite the vet, even though it was the slowest lunge in the world and he missed.
at least he was comfortable and basically just went to sleep. no pain.
goodbye, Sam.
